Asian Paints Presents The Eloquent Kannagi Art District
Located on the outskirts of Chennai, Kannagi Nagar is one of the biggest resettlement sites of India — established after the devastating Tsunami of 2004. It is home to displaced fishermen communities who lived on the waterfront. Over the years, increased crime and unemployment have lent a negative image to the neighbourhood, despite it being a vibrant area with community living at its core. With the aim of altering this perception, Asian Paints and St+art invited artists to respond to the theme of ‘People and Environment’ and create India’s 5th Art district. #KannagiArtDistrict was officially inaugurated on 9th March 2020 by eminent ministers of the Tamil Nadu State Government.
Presenting a diverse array of styles and techniques, the murals in the Kannagi Art District illustrate ideas relating to home, hope and livelihoods as an ode to the spirit of the residents. Artist-led workshops for children, along with collaborations with local NGOs and tuition centers, have culminated in the creation of smaller murals around the district, serving as permanent remnants of a creative exchange. The Art District offers a deep-dive into Kannagi Naggar, bringing forth testimonies that have been buried underneath.
